Yemen: Child labor continues to be an issue – ILO Report

International Labour Organization – ILO – issued a report on January 15th which established the number of child laborers in Yemen -the poorest and most populous country of the Arabian Peninsula – to 1,3 million, about 17 percent of the country’s 7.7 million working age children. The report states that child labor is a ‘pervasive and growing problem” in Yemen, which if left unmonitored will have “serious implications for the future and economic development of the country.” The situation analysis conducted by the ILO underscores the risks the children in the worst forms of child labor face. Children in agriculture, street work and fishing have been identified as worst forms of child labor. (See http://www.calameo.com/read/0003125504ed71ce6ef80 IIECL Publications Library for a copy.)
