Tens of thousands of children, both male and female, were abducted to fight in the army of the Democratic Republic of Congo over the years. Children as young as nine years old had been forcibly taken from their homes and villages to fight in armed battles. This has begun to change, with many children being removed from warring militias and returned to village life.
