Global: Applications being accepted for Spring 2012 Emily Grants

If you are a young person, teacher, school or NGO working with children and/or youth and need a small amount of funds to support a project idea to help end exploitative child labor, we want to hear your ideas. In collaboration with the Emily Sandall Foundation, ECL will be awarding 12 Emily grants in the spring of 2012. Applications are due by midnight March 31, 2012. The theme for this round of grants is to support research and information gathering, documented by photos or video on worst forms of child labor that exists in local communities. There may be a form of child labor that has gone unnoticed or overlooked that needs to be brought to the attention of major donors and UN agencies. Application guidelines can be found by clicking here. The re is no need to write to request permission to send a proposal and please send all applications to ESMF-Grant@endchildlabor.org.

This is your chance to shed light on activities where children are being used, forced or trafficked to perform worst forms of child labor in your community. Presenting the story of an affected child or children engaged in this form of child labor is encouraged to be included within the application. Applications that focus on other strategies to end child labor will also be considered. Information on how to apply can be found within the Emily Sandall Memorial Grants section on the website.

Research activities to be funded should include a well-rounded overview of factors that contribute to child labor, including economic, cultural, educational, political, health or other. Given that this is primary research, footnotes may not be required. However, if other research on this topic of child labor has been conducted, this should be footnoted and appropriately cited. The research should include: 1) factors that contribute to the targeted worst form of child labor; 2) estimate of the level and extent of child labor in the targeted geographic area; 3) photos or video that document the research on the situation of children engaged in the targeted worst forms of child labor; 4) proposed strategy to address one or more of the contributing factors to the targeted form of child labor; and 5) identification of key stakeholders who could play a role in eliminating the targeted form of child labor in the geographic area. Each award to perform the research is a maximum of US $500. Research projects that are selected will be given primary consideration for funding in the fall 2012 round of Emily grants to move forward with implementing the child labor prevention / elimination strategy.

Applications must be received on or before midnight on March 31, 2012. Awards will be announced in April / May following a review committee selection by the Emily Sandall Memorial Foundation. Selected organizations will receive notification and the public announcement will be released via ECL’s website. To apply requires a very simple application. Application guidelines  can be found here (look for guidelines at bottom of page). To view the list of 2011 grantees, follow the Emily Grants links from the menu on ECL’s website at www.endchildlabor.org.

Child labour in india especially in the atate of Tamilandu, the girl children are the most vulnerable to sexual exploitation and high risk to HIV.AIDS. Recently the men turn sexual vision to young girls due to HIV threat. In the working places huge number of girls sexually exploited by the supervisors and owners of the industries.
In namakkal district mostly children employed in Brick maufacturing industries, Power looms, spinning mills and agricultural sectors.
We are in emergeny to release the children fron the clutches of exploitors.

  • Ezekiel Sakwa Obulemile

I am a Chairman of a Community-based Children’s Advocacy on Education, social welfare and human child rights, called Geta Community Inter-Link S.H. Group in Kenya. The Group was formed to mitigate child rights to education, care and support after the Kenya’s 2007 post election crisis, where majority of the members were adversely affected, leaving orphaned children under forced labour for survival.

We work with a Divisional Centre Against Torture, which I feel if contacted could be potential collaborators for this proposed intervention.

In view of the above, I would like to know whether we can link up and forge possible collaboration besides this on-going call for proposals, which my group is going to try.

    Thank you.

  • Simon Abukari

    Dear Sir/Madam,

Thanks for this opportunity and best wishes in all your endeavours.

I’ve worked as a volunteer for the past 15 years with the Catholic Church in Northern Ghana, Tamale specifically within several village communities in evangelization.

From my experience, human needs goes beyond only the spiritual to the real personal development of the people, hence I’ve started and NGO that goes by the name – “Centre for Life Transformation” aimed at addressing human development within the communities, targeting children, the youth, women, the aged and the less privileged in society.

We hope to develop the human person through education, working for justice and Peace, reproduction health, the environment, good governance, food security, micro-finance etc.etc.

The area of child labour is also our major concern and I should be interested in how to source funding to help eliminate this canker and put in place a sustained human development programme that will guarantee that people live fulfilled lives in these communities -(John 10:10b).

How about that, please? Thanks for your collaboration in our attempt to serve humanity.

Child labor is rampant in my community and i have been looking for an opportunity just like this to make sure that such a thing has be come the thing of the past. In the part of our world Northern-Ghana – the issue of children is over looked and non is doing something about it because of social misrepresentation and cultural misapplication. I run a community base organization call CENTRE FOR EDUCATION AND YOUTH DEVELOPMENT (CEYD) and our aim is to fight this ill in the society. CEYD is still a growing organization which only source of funding is through members contribution so i believe with this CEYD can fight this issue.

    Respected sir/Madam,

Our organization is registered under various Indian Laws. You may work with us freely.

Our organization is so interested to work under your organzation about the child labour issues and end those problems with your great support. Please share our ideas to solve those problems permanently.

Indian Government completely failed to remove the child labour system because of corruption from lower level to higher level.
With the corruption minded officers effect, they select the profitable organizations instead of Non Profitable Organizations. These profitable organizations should run these programs for the profit, so they get 100 per cent grants without run these programs successfully with the support of corruption officers support.

In our India day by day child labours are increasing because of only corruption officers and profitable organizations.

Please share our organization ideas to remove child labour system.

I should give you more information on your reply.

    Yours truly,

  • Mrs Saroj Khosla

For the last more than 30 years I have been based in an industrial city( Faridabad, Haryana , India ). It is one of the biggest industrial town in North India. Exploitation of children in the form of child labour and other forms of cruelty towards chilldren such as denial of Education specially to Girl child, female foeticide, mal nutrition, child marriage etc take place regularly in society, inspite of Indian Law, prohibits these practices. Faridabad being an industrial city has its own other forms of children exploitation as they are employed in all and sundry work such as rag picking,scrap/junk yard workers and ancillary unit workers. Through your program we wish to launch programs, highlighting the exploitation of children and what they can do, if nurtured and educated properly.Dist Faridabad and the National Capital Region has more than 10000 Industrial Units small and big, where the exploitation of children takes place, for we wish to make our humble contribution through your program, if given a chance.

    Child Labor in Indonesia

Very diverse child labor in Indonesia, started as domestic workers, who work more than 8 hours and no days off, to help parents work.

Workers in the name of helping children with their parents, do not look as child labor, such as helping parents as fishermen, farming, or other non-formal sector.

Child labor from the family of collectors, very dangerous for the health of children and the children are usually not the school, although only helping out at home, as well as cutting waste sorting and selecting paper.

To fulfill the rights of children required an integrated and sustainable program, in terms of education and economic development of family and community awareness.

Most of the working children in our country is not get a chance for receiving formal basic education. Thank you for your joining our blog and comments on our website. We don’t often get feedback, but appreciate your taking the time to comment. Most all of our publications and materials are available from the website and can be downloaded and printed or copied. We try to ensure that other publications that might be helpful to organizations working on child labor are available via the website as well. Check out the Resources section on the website and look for the publications section. There is a wealth of information located there. We are hopeful that soon our database will get up and going so that organizations like yours, your members, and all of the other organizations who have written on the blog or sent comments can add their organizations to the database.

Disasters can be so devastating for a country or region. Have you researched to document the level and extent of the impact that the cyclone has had on children in your community? This might be an interesting research project and then lead to the development of a plan that specifically targets those factors that are on-going since the cyclone. It’s not just a matter of poverty, but other factors that also contribute to child labor. For example, parents lack skills to create work for themselves, there are no schools that are accessible for the children, quality of education is poor so children don’t want to attend, teachers use corporal punishment, children have no uniforms to wear, etc., etc. Understanding the nature and extent of the problem is the first step to designing a realistic plan of action. Poverty exists everywhere, but there is not always the worst forms of child labor. What makes the difference in your community? That’s why we are undertaking a new strategy with this round of Emily grants. We want to know and help build the capacity of those organizations we are supporting to go about implementing their projects using best practices. This response is not just for your organization but for other individuals and organizations who are applying. However, We encourage individuals and groups, like your, to submit your project or research ideas to IIECL for consideration of an Emily grant. Please see the website for application instructions. Please go to the homepage of the website. There are two links in the article that take you to a document that you can print or download. This document contains the instructions. They are very simple and do not require a great deal of “pages” to support a response. We are looking at the project ideas or research topic that makes the most sense or presents something that responds to the theme of the Emily grant projects. This year, it is related to research or continuing to support projects that address any of the factors that contribute to child labor. So, take another look and see if it’s easier to find the application guidelines given the changes that we’ve posted on the website. Good luck.

  • Diane Mull

No individual or organization is required to ask permission to send a proposal. Just send the proposal. The criteria for selection depends on what is being proposed, whether it responds to the theme or areas of interest to end child labor and if the cost to support the activity is within the maximum of funds available, i.e., US $500.

  • Diane Mull

While orphans are an especially vulnerable group of children and we wish that we had the funds to help these children, IIECL’s limited resources are not of a nature to sponsor an individual or group of children on an on-going basis. There are other organizations that provide child sponsorship, including World Vision, Child Fund, Compassion, Global Ministries, Orphan Sponsorship, etc. These groups may be a better resource for you to consider applying in order to secure longer-term sponsorship for a child or group of children. IIECL’s funds are not intended for construction of a building such as you describe. IIECL has collaborated with other organizations who were covering the majority of the construction costs, such that IIECL could support a very small gap in a building campaign to that would benefit education and skills training for thousands of children in the future. I hope this helps to clarify.

  • Diane Mull

    Hi, Atta (FARZ).

So very sorry that I haven’t responded. However, given the level of response to our requests for applications, we can no longer send acknowledgements regarding the receipt of applications. It is highly possible that if you sent your documentation regarding your prior grant at the same time when we are receiving Emily grants for the next round, it may have gotten lost within all of the hundreds of applications that we received. It would be good to send your documentation during the month when Emily grants are being accepted. Sending your documentation of past grant activities by mail is a good idea, but also send electronic copies of your report and pictures to this email address: Diane.Mull@endchildlabor.org. It is an address not regularly used any more, but I will keep an eye for your email. In that way, I will be sure to get your documentation of your past grant activity.

    With regards,

    Diane Mull
