Plan's operations in Pakistan have been suspended after three members of staff were killed by gunmen in Mansehra in the North West Frontier on Monday, February 25th.

The United Nations has also suspended all missions to Mansehra until Friday.

A visitor to the office was also killed after gunmen burst into Plan's building and opened fire before setting off three explosive devices.

All the dead are male, and two more workers remain seriously injured.

One funeral has already been held with the others planned for later on today (Tuesday).

The attack came on Monday afternoon when a group of six to 12 men, carrying guns and grenades, marched into the office and fired indiscriminately before setting off the grenades at 4:15 PM local time. The office was burned to the ground.

The attack has come as a shock for Plan, which has deep roots in the Mansehra area and has worked with the community for more than a decade. Most of the staff are local people. Plan was given no warning of a threat to its staff or offices at the time and the motive for the attack is still unclear.

The office has 21 full-time and seven part-time staff. All are local — four female, and the rest male. At the time the office was being protected by unarmed guards.

On behalf of all Plan USA staff, our heartfelt condolences go out to our colleagues in Pakistan and to the families of those injured or killed.

Staff, sponsors and other organizations have expressed their sympathy:

"Our thoughts and sympathies are with our colleagues in Plan."

"We are sad with you. God Bless and be with those who lost loved ones." (Church World Service)

The outpouring of messages of sympathy and condolence from the Plan family around the world, NGO colleagues, government officials, and Plan's many friends has been truly heart-warming. If you would like to add your voice to theirs, please write to DonorRelations@planusa.org. We will ensure that all condolences reach the staff and families in Mansehra.

Plan works with local communities in Pakistan on improving health care and education as well as promoting the rights of children.
